Executive Summary
When a high-traffic e-commerce platform became the target of a sustained Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack, Octoyoung Global Solutions was brought in to restore services. By rapidly deploying Cloudflare’s Advanced Security Suite, we neutralized a 100+ Gbps attack, shielding the origin infrastructure and ensuring 100% uptime for legitimate customers.
The Challenge
The client’s infrastructure was under a coordinated assault, experiencing both Layer 3/4 (network) and Layer 7 (application) attacks. The influx of malicious traffic had rendered their digital storefront inaccessible during a critical sales period.
- Total Service Outage: The website was completely offline for several hours, leading to significant revenue loss.
- Infrastructure Overload: The origin servers were overwhelmed by a massive “HTTP Flood,” pushing CPU and memory utilization to their limits.
- Vulnerability: The lack of an edge security layer meant the attackers could target the server’s IP directly, bypassing basic firewalls.
Our Solution
Octoyoung executed an emergency security hardening plan, placing Cloudflare as a protective “shield” between the attackers and the client’s servers.
1. Real-Time Mitigation
We enabled Cloudflare’s “Under Attack Mode” and configured the Web Application Firewall (WAF). This immediately forced all incoming traffic to pass a non-intrusive security challenge, effectively filtering out botnet traffic while allowing genuine users through.
2. Anycast Network Defense
By routing the client’s traffic through Cloudflare’s global Anycast network, we dispersed the massive volume of attack data across 300+ global data centers. This “diluted” the attack, ensuring that no single server or network link was overwhelmed.
3. Origin Masking & Secure Tunneling
- Masked the Origin IP: Updated DNS records to hide the real server IP behind Cloudflare’s proxy.
- Cloudflare Tunnel: Established a secure, encrypted tunnel from the server to the Cloudflare edge. This allowed us to close all inbound ports on the server’s firewall, making the origin invisible to the public internet.
The Results
Within minutes of the Octoyoung intervention, the attack was successfully mitigated. The client’s platform remained stable even as the botnet continued its attempts.
| Site Availability | 0% (Offline) | 100% (Online) |
|---|---|---|
| Mitigation Speed | N/A (Manual failure) | Instant / Automated |
| Server CPU Load | 100% (Crashed) | 12% (Normal) |
| Malicious Requests Blocked | 0 | Millions per hour |
Conclusion
By implementing a “Zero-Trust” edge architecture, Octoyoung Global Solutions transformed a critical security failure into a resilient, high-performance environment. This case study demonstrates our ability to respond to active threats and implement long-term security strategies that protect our clients’ bottom line.
